V. V. Rozanov as the Founder of Literary Hermeneutics in Russia

The purpose of this article is to show the role of V. V. Rozanov in the formation of the hermeneutical tradition in Russia. This tradition, which was later represented by the works of D. S. Merezhkovsky, L. Shestov, N. A. Berdyaev, and others, replaced the literary criticism that dominated the 19th century (from V. G. Belinsky to N. K. Mikhailovsky) during the Silver Age. It replaces the socio-political engagement of the previous tradition with an interest in the philosophical and religious aspects of art. The first in this series is V. V. Rozanov's book “The Legend of the Great Inquisitor by F.M. Dostoevsky” (1891). It preceded the entire line of philosophical Dostoevsky studies that emerged in Russian literature in the 20th century. Additionally, V. V. Rozanov's research interests extended to the works of other Russian authors, both poetic and prose. In his research, the author relied on hermeneutical and historical-philosophical methods.
