Men in the Modern Urban Space: Narrowing the Horizon of Expectations

The process of narrowing the horizons of a man's expectations in the modern urban space is super-urgent. The structural factors of the transformation of male identity are investigated: urbanization, the changing nature of work, the digitalization of the economy, the feminization of social roles, the growing number of single-parent families, and the erosion of institutional patterns of male socialization. Based on classical sociological concepts, a theoretical model for studying changes in male role expectations in a post-industrial metropolis is proposed. It is concluded that we are not talking about a “crisis of masculinity” in a narrow psychological sense, but about a structural restructuring of social horizons, in which a man loses institutionally fixed scenarios of the future and finds himself in conditions of normative uncertainty.
