The Political Thought of Anaxagoras

The article provides a historical reconstruction of the political views of Anaxagoras. It is established that Anaxagoras’ political preferences are characterized by a combination of democratic and cosmopolitan ideas. The version about Anaxagoras’ democratic sentiments is confirmed by his long stay in Athens during the period of the highest flowering of ancient Greek democracy. Among the students and listeners of Anaxagoras were the greatest supporters of democracy – Pericles, Euripides and, possibly, Themistocles. Anaxagoras’ cosmopolitan sentiments manifested themselves in the idea that the whole cosmos is the fatherland and in an indifferent attitude to the burial site. It is shown that these ideas of Anaxagoras were connected with his general aspiration to a contemplative life.
