Russian far East: A Suitcase Without a Handle or …?

The history of the Russian Far East, beginning in the 1860s, when the macro-region within its modern borders was finally established, is a history of a region whose social and economic dynamics were influenced by geopolitical factors. Does this mean that for over a century and a half, the Far East was the object of targeted state policy as an integral component of state policy in the Pacific? The answer is more no than yes. A retrospective analysis of state policy indicates that periods of active advancement toward Asia (the East) were followed by equally lengthy periods when the geopolitical vector shifted toward Europe (the West). Naturally, this inevitably affected the shift in strategic priorities of state policy toward the Russian Far East. The current stage – «The Turn to the East»: Expectations and Results. The Siberianization of Russia, or Turn to the East 2.0. Possible changes in the geopolitical landscape of the North Pacific and their impact on the social and economic dynamics of the Far Eastern macro-region.
