Siberia in the World-System Strategies of the Russian State: Towards the Problem of Integration of Peripheral Societies

This article attempts to interpret the history of relations between Russia and Siberia (11th-21st centuries) using a world-system approach. By describing the political-economic and cultural aspects of the social dynamics of the spatial structures of the world-system, it provides an insight into the history of Siberia as the internal periphery of the Russian state at various stages of its development. The article demonstrates the specifics of Siberia's peripheral ties with the Russian state at the stage of the Moscow Principality, which competed with Novgorod; the Moscow world-empire during the genesis of capitalism; the Russian empire as a semi-peripheral zone of the European world-economy; the Soviet state with a division of labor system relatively autonomous from the global one; and Russia's post-Soviet inclusion in the global division of labor system. The theoretical conclusions obtained allow us to criticize a number of basic provisions of the «Siberization of Russia» program proposed by S.A. Karaganov’s research team.
