Concerning Migration Intentions of the Population of the North-East of Russia in the Context of the Problem of Regional and Ethnic Identity

The purpose of the article is to identify the importance of regional and ethnic identities in shaping the attitudes of the population towards living in a certain territory with the definition of features. To achieve this goal, we analyzed data from a sociological study conducted in two regions of Northeastern Russia, which recorded migration intentions and the importance of regional and ethnic identity. It is demonstrated that the importance of both ethnic and regional identities for residents of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug is differentiated depending on the ethnicity of the respondent. The Russian population of Yakutia and Chukotka perceives the importance of regional identity differently, which affects migration intentions. Ethnic and regional identities overlap in many ways for the indigenous peoples of these regions, however, they have specific refractions in planning migration destinations. People who feel strongly attached to their region are less likely to plan a trip.
