Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the topic of ethnicity from the standpoint of primordialism, constructivism and the stage model of ethnic identity development. It is determined that the polysemantic nature of “ethnicity” was caused by changes in the socio-historical century, a shift in ideological accents in relation to ethnic groups, as well as the difference in methodological approaches. Within the framework of primordialist and constructivist, the most controversial issues are defined: statehood, formation, transformation of ethnic groups; essential features of ethnic groups and individual ethnic identity; the role of the border in the interethnic light. An analysis of the stage development models of ethnic identity by J. Marcia, J. Finney, W. Cross is carried out, which showed the commonality of theoretical conclusions: ethnic identity can be both positive and negative, have different degrees of breadth of its manifestation, which depends on what stages it goes through, and going through a crisis is not mandatory.
