Interaction of Languages in the Yakut Society: Experience of Focus Group Interviews

The article is devoted to the interaction of two official languages in the Republic of Sakha (Yakut language and Russian language), as well as to the functioning of languages of small indigenous peoples of the North, living on the territory of the republic. The main goal of the researchers was to answer the question whether it was possible to achieve actual bilingualism in republic, in relation to Russian and Yakut languages; what is the quality of language teaching in general and educational institutions in the Republic of Sakha. Research method: focus group interviews conducted in 6 districts (ulus) of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and in the capital of the republic, the city of Yakutsk. Special attention is paid to the techniques of processing transcripts of focus group interviews, with an emphasis on the method of forming a semantic core and identifying the positions of focus group experts. The study concluded that the parity interaction of two state languages in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) developed in 6 studied districts and in Yakutsk. At the same time, bilingualism in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is perceived by some experts as an asymmetric process, as an "imbalanced phenomenon," Teaching the Yakut language and the languages of indigenous small-numbered peoples of the north in schools of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) has deteriorated. The shortage of skilled personnel is felt almost everywhere. One of the best result of this research is thesis that bilinguals are considered cultural brokers and their behavioral patterns in society can be classified as ethnocultural neotraditionalism.
