Plato and Traditional Religious Beliefs

It is established that Plato has an ambivalent attitude towards traditional religious beliefs. On the one hand, he defends the ceremonial and ritual side of the Olympic religion and the positive myths about the gods. On the other hand, Plato criticizes false myths that depict the vicious deeds of the gods. Plato's teaching on the transmigration of souls also indicates a discrepancy with traditional religious beliefs. Plato's views expressed a desire to reform the Olympic religion in order to strengthen it. This aspiration was a reaction to the weakening of religious and moral norms in Greek society during the late Classical period. At the same time, Plato's idea that the gods are not a source of evil for man could play a role in the development of ancient atheism.
