Abstract

Article deals with the problem of interpretation of “Socratic memorabilia”, the first public work of J. G. Hamann. In this work the style itself serves as a method or means of doing philosophy. Using hermeneutical approach and intertextual analysis, the following features implemented in Hamann’s style are laid out: holistic character, analogy, irony, typology, metaschematism, hiddenness, coincidence of opposites. This research results in reconstruction of the 4 levels of narrative including three-fold typology presented as a chart. Hamann describes historical Socrates whom he views as a type of Christ, on the one hand, and of himself, on the other, for the purpose of providing apologetic of his own position for the addressees I. K. Berens and I. Kant. In addition, there is given translation of Hamann’s letter where he provides an outline of his work and gives some explanation as to its purpose.
