About the Heartland and the Role of Russia in the Eurasian Space

Based on the works of domestic and foreign authors, the connection between geography and the history of the development of the state is shown. The geopolitical significance of Eurasia and the Eurasian «supporting territory» is highlighted. The place of Russia in Mackinder's «axis» theory is shown. A historical review of the factors of Russian Westernization is made. The reasons for turning to the Asian vector are presented. Territorial and geographical prerequisites and the accumulated cultural and historical background are considered as a potential for interstate cooperation and Russia's mediating role in Eurasia.
